About
In 2017, the Beers family, Mark and Susan, launched Blue Bench Garden on a half-acre portion of a larger family-owned property in Dahlonega, GA. Following retirement from corporate directors’ positions, the Beers wanted to channel their respective creative energies into an endeavor that would keep them busy and healthy and benefit the community.
Blue Bench Garden produces fresh farm eggs from a flock of more than 80 chickens and seasonal fruits, vegetables, and cut flowers from the 11,000 square foot market garden. The Beers subscribe to the conviction that good food can be grown responsibly in a small space, using sustainable farming methods, and without pesticides.
Mark and Susan also believe that high-quality eggs and meat are the result of healthy chickens that have access to nutritious feed, natural protein supplements, and free-range area. To this end, they raise their flock with the health and welfare of each chicken being a priority. The Beers’ flock is enrolled in the National Poultry Improvement Program (NPIP) and is tested for target diseases semi-annually.
The Beers’ vegetable garden stands out as a lush agricultural painting with an expansive palette of forms, textures and colors. It incorporates vibrant islands and corridors of herbs and flowers that provide food and sanctuary for beneficial organisms and pollinators. Susan is dedicated to sustainable farming and utilizes bio-intensive farming principles to produce more than 2,000 pounds of produce annually which goes to feed their extended family and is sold via their onsite farm market. Blue Bench Garden is a member of Georgia Grown ® and is a certified butterfly garden and habitat by the North American Butterfly Association.
Mark’s passion for cooking led to the establishment of the Blue Bench Garden bakery where delicious breads and sweets are made daily using only high-quality ingredients and with devotion to the craft of fine bread making.
Mark and Susan are both creative people who needed an outlet. They individually and collaboratively design and handcraft a variety of unique garden and outdoor décor items such as hypertufa pots and troughs and concrete planters.
